Nevada’s Largest City Logged 63 Murders in 2026. It’s Already Cleared 89% of Them.

Homicides in Las Vegas are up 17 percent this year, ending three straight years of decline. The 89 percent clearance rate behind that number stands in sharp contrast to Nevada's other violent crime data.

Roughly every three days and fifteen hours this year, a Las Vegas homicide detective has caught a new case. That is not a metaphor. It is arithmetic, drawn directly from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s own numbers: 63 murders logged across the first 228 days of 2026, one every 3.6 days on average.

What happens after that new case lands on a detective’s desk is the part of this story that almost never makes the news. Nearly nine times out of ten this year, it gets solved.

SECTION I. Case Volume

Through Aug. 16, 63 murders is up from 54 over the same stretch of 2025, a 17 percent increase. That reverses three straight years of decline: LVMPD recorded 151 murders in 2022, 142 in 2023, 115 in 2024 and 92 in 2025, a drop of nearly 40 percent over three years. The department has already logged more cases through mid-August than the pace that produced last year’s full-year total.

SECTION II. Clearance Data

The department has cleared 56 of those 63 cases, an 89 percent clearance rate, by arrest, submission for prosecution, identification of a suspect, or the suspect’s own death. Nevada’s finalized 2024 murder clearance rate was 75.12 percent statewide, already the highest among violent crime categories. LVMPD’s 89 percent this year sits even higher than that statewide benchmark.

Set against Nevada’s 2024 rape clearance rate of 20.70 percent, the gap is stark: a Las Vegas homicide this year has been roughly four times as likely to be cleared as a rape reported statewide in 2024.

The murder numbers do not rebut that finding, they complete it. When Nevada law enforcement prioritizes a case, clearance above 75 percent is achievable. The open question is why that result does not extend to every violent crime category.

SECTION III. Contributing Factors

The department’s own breakdown of causative factors shows a mixed picture. Domestic violence remains the single largest driver of homicide in Las Vegas, 15 cases so far in 2026, down 6 percent from 16 at this point last year. Altercations described as “perceived disrespect” fell slightly, from nine cases to eight. The category that grew fastest was robbery related killings, up 50 percent from four to six.

Victim data shows a similar shift. Homicide victims ages 30 to 39 more than doubled, from 11 in 2025 to 24 in 2026, the only age group to move sharply in either direction. Male victims rose from 37 to 44. Female victims rose from 17 to 19.

Justifiable homicides, meanwhile, fell sharply, a 63 percent drop, from 16 through this point in 2025 to just 6 in 2026, which on its own lowers the count of incidents police investigate as officer involved or self defense shootings.

SECTION IV. Comparative Jurisdiction: Reno

Reno recorded 23 homicides in 2024, up from 19 in 2023, according to FBI data compiled by City-Data.com, even as the city’s overall crime rate fell 13 percent that year. Reno does not publish a weekly, department level murder stat sheet with the same granularity LVMPD does, so a direct, current year comparison between Nevada’s two largest cities is not possible with public data as detailed as what Las Vegas provides.

QUICK EXPLAINER

What does “cleared” actually mean?
A case is cleared when police make an arrest, submit charges for prosecution, positively identify a suspect who cannot be arrested (deceased or otherwise unavailable), or determine the death was justifiable. It does not require a conviction.

Why do clearance rates vary so much by crime type?
Clearance often depends on whether a victim survives to identify a suspect, whether there were witnesses, and how much physical evidence a scene produces. Homicides typically draw far more investigative resources per case than higher volume crimes like burglary or, notably, sexual assault.

Is a 63 percent year over year jump normal?
Not typically. Year over year swings of that size are more common in categories with low overall case counts, where a handful of additional or fewer incidents produce a large percentage change.

SECTION V. Outlook

LVMPD’s own five year monthly trend data shows murder counts easing through much of 2025 before ticking back up in early 2026. Whether that is a statistical blip in a smaller, partial year sample or the start of a new trend will not be clear until the department publishes a full year of 2026 data. What is already clear is that a higher body count this year has not come with a lower clearance rate. In Las Vegas, at least, those two figures are moving independently of each other, and for now, the clearance rate is winning.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

FINDING 1. LVMPD murders rose 17 percent through Aug. 16, 2026 versus the same period in 2025, ending three straight years of decline.

FINDING 2. The department’s 2026 clearance rate stands at 89 percent, well above Nevada’s 2024 statewide murder clearance rate of 75.12 percent.

FINDING 3. A homicide in Las Vegas this year was roughly four times as likely to be cleared as a rape reported statewide in 2024.

FINDING 4. Domestic violence remains the leading causative factor, though cases in that category fell 6 percent year over year, while robbery related killings rose 50 percent.

FINDING 5. LVMPD’s murder statistics are preliminary and revised weekly, so exact figures will continue to shift as this year’s cases are finalized.

REPORT NOTES

Percentages, day-based averages, and the 4x rape-clearance comparison were calculated by Two Nevadas from LVMPD’s Murder Stat Sheet and Nevada DPS crime data; none appear pre-calculated in any single source. The 89% clearance rate is 56 divided by 63 cases as reported on the Aug. 16 LVMPD sheet.
